Indonesia in State of Waste Emergency

Waste is the biggest problem for some country and Indonesia is the second biggest contributor to plastic waste in the oceans in the world. In 2015, an average person in Indonesia produces 0.7 kilogram of waste per day. With 250 million people, a staggering 175,000 tons of waste is produced each day. 69 percent of our waste goes to landfill, but the landfills are struggling to cope with the ever-increasing waste as the population grows and people consume more and more.

Government then realize that relying on landfills would only exacerbate waste problems, the government has tried to introduce the public to the concept of '3R' (reuse, reduce and recycle). In order to promote the concept of recycling, the government plans to improve the current garbage bank system, first introduced in 2011, to reduce the volume of waste at the household level.

This problem is very common issue in my country. Back about to five years ago, that garbage is everywhere. I think the government has done their job to make this country better. We can see now during rainy season, the flood can be prevented.
